5 Steps to Close Out the Snow Season

Winter is finally over! It was a mild season this year but now, with summer just around the corner, the threat of accumulating snow has finally passed. Some people might be disappointed in the lack of snow this season, while others are rejoicing over the mild cold months and early spring. Regardless of how you view the snow or lack thereof, the end of the season leaves property managers and business owners with the challenge of officially closing out the season. Here are five tried and true tasks you need to do for your business before you can officially move on to spring.

1. Exit “Staged” Right:

Depending on the size of your site equipment and materials may have been staged at your location in preparation for the winter. For most locations, stakes would have been installed to identify curb lines, fire hydrants, and other critical site features. With the winter weather behind us, it’s time to have these items removed. The company that installed them or left them for quick cleanup should reach out to schedule a time to come and gather their materials.

2. Clean It Up:

Even after the snow has melted, the remnants of it often linger. Melting snow piles often reveal accumulated trash. Even in the mildest winter seasons, residual deicing agents may need to be swept up to keep your lot looking its best. Consider a complete sweeping and porter service to start the spring anew.

3. Damage Control:

Despite best efforts, the reality is that snow plows and heavy equipment can cause damage to a site. The damage may be as minor as a missing chunk of grass or as serious as downed light poles. It is always best practice for an owner or manager to walk each site and identify any issues.

4. Replay:

Good, bad, or indifferent–regardless of how you feel about your contractor’s performance, an end-of-season meeting is always in order. Taking this time to review the challenges, wins, communication, and circumstances of the season will help both you and your provider be better positioned for future success.

5. Think Ahead:

Believe it or not, the time to start preparing for the next winter season is now. If you’re happy with your provider, why not renew their contract and get it off the list of things to do? Or, if you’re thinking a change is in order, there’s no better time to explore your options than while the memory of the past season is fresh.

So, there you have it, five simple steps that will not only bring an end to your current snow season but get the ball rolling for the next.
